Staphylococcus aureus food poisoning is fairly common in the United States. It is typically caused by the improper handling of food, particularly those that are kept at room temperature. Gastrointestinal Symptoms

The primary signs of staphylococcal food poisoning are gastrointestinal in nature. These include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping and swelling and diarrhea. Vomiting episodes can last up to 24 hours, and recovery typically takes 2 days, though it can take longer in some instances.


In some cases, a mild fever is associated with staphylococcal food poisoning, but not all people affected by it will exhibit all the symptoms.

Severe Cases

In the more severe cases, individuals with staphylococcal food poisoning can experience headache and muscle cramping and changes in blood pressure or pulse rate.
