High in Purine Foods for Gout

Purines are a naturally occurring substance in the body, but they are also taken in through food. While purines help maintain blood vessel health, they also can crystalize into uric acid when the kidneys are not functioning at full capacity. These crystals settle at the joints, causing a painful condition known as gout. To control gout, it is important to moderate how many purines you ingest.

Purines Effect on Gout

Purines have a direct effect on gout in the body. When you have too much uric acid in your system, it will build up in your body and accumulate at the joints. This usually occurs in conjunction with heart disease or kidney issues. When too many uric acid crystals settle in the joints, the gout (sometimes called gouty arthritis) will cause stiff joints that swell up and become inflamed and very painful. Over time, gout can cause damage to the joints and even reduced flexibility.

Foods With High Purine Content

Many foods contain very high levels of purines and should be avoided if you wish to prevent flare-ups of gout. Examples of these foods include sardines, anchovies, mincemeat, sweetbreads, mussels, liver, gravies, brains, organ meats, mackerel, kidney and herring.

Foods With Moderate Purine Content

Other foods don't contain super high levels of purines, but they still have a large amount and shouldn't be consumed in large quantities if you suffer from the gout. Examples of these foods include chicken, beef, pork, ham, mutton, oatmeal, spinach, venison, shellfish, lobster, peas, salmon, carp, duck, goose, lamb, bouillon, crab and cauliflower.
