How to Conquer Laryngitis

1.

Melt Butter in a mug or cup. (Using the microwave is best.)

2.

Add turmeric powder and mix to create a "slurry".

3.

Add 1 cup milk and stir until well mixed. (Water may be used if milk is not available.)

4.

Heat to the temperature of hot chocolate or coffee. Do not boil.

5.

Drink the entire cup as quickly as comfortable. (Do not gargle. Do not swish. Drink.)

Tips and Warnings

  • Turmeric is sold in America in the spice section and comes in a bottle. It has a distinct dark, dark yellow color like urine after a night on the town.
  • The pungent slurry looks much like something I would spread on a horse's open wound.
  • Turmeric has become a popular herbal supplement due to potent antiseptic properties.
  • Turmeric can be used to treat stomach problems including diarrhea.
  • In India turmeric is a mild digestive herb eaten after meals to settle the stomach. That is why it is used so heavily in Indian cooking and especially in curry.
  • The yellow coloring of turmeric creates a tough stain.
  • There are no acceptable words to describe the awful smell and taste of this concoction. It takes me about 15 or 20 minutes to down the entire mixture. The first time I tried this I regained my voice in less than one half hour. There was no pain and I was speaking at a regular volume. I was able to speak for about five or six hours before I had to repeat the treatment. I do admit, though, that when my voice disappeared the second time, I went without speaking for a couple of hours as I tried to build up courage to down another cup. After three treatments, my voice has returned to normal. As much as I hate to admit it, since that day I have kept and use turmeric for a sore throat or raspy voice. I have also discovered many additional uses for this bright yellow spice. But I still can barely tolerate the taste.
