How to Help an elderly person with Shingles

1.

Apply Calamine Lotion. If the rash itches terribly, you can help them apply Calamine Lotion. If you have to apply the lotion yourself, make sure to glove up, and wash your hands very thoroughly afterwards. Applying the lotion can help bring some relief to the elderly patient.

2.

Try and distract the patient. Try involving the patient in some in room activities. Playing games, watching t.v. or just talking to the patient can distract them from the pain. Give the patient some time, don't always rush off.

3.

Make sure the patient gets their pain pills when they need them. Most of the time that an elderly person gets Shingles, their doctor will prescribe them pain pills. If your patient has them make sure they get them as prescribed, or as needed. Don't let the pain build up.

Tips and Warnings
